When we talk about certifications, its not only a certificate you received after the exam, You must analyze the certification track first which is suitable accordingly to your experience and job nature. In this article i tried to explain the ISTQB track for QA professionals , please feel free to share your feedback and suggestions.
ISTQB® (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) has defined the "ISTQB® Certified Tester" scheme that has become the world-wide leader in the certification of competences in software testing.
ISTQB have three certification levels
ISTQB provides the choice to professionals to choose the suitable track accordingly to their profession and job needs. We will discuss all levels one by one.

What is ISTQB
ISTQB® (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) was founded in November 2002 and is a not-for-profit association legally registered in Belgium.ISTQB® (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) has defined the "ISTQB® Certified Tester" scheme that has become the world-wide leader in the certification of competences in software testing.
ISTQB have three certification levels
- Foundation
- Advanced
- Expert
ISTQB provides the choice to professionals to choose the suitable track accordingly to their profession and job needs. We will discuss all levels one by one.
Foundation level (CTFL)
- Stands for “Certified Tester Foundation Level”
- Its foundation of the ISTQB, whatever the track you are choosing, you must pass the foundation level exam its mandatory for all other levels.
- ISTQB also provides two optional extensions, after you passed the ISTQB foundation level exam. These extension are optional and to appear for these extension you must pass the foundation level exam first
- Agile Tester
- Once you cleared the foundation level exam, you can also appear for agile tester extension exam.
- Suitable for those who are working in agile environment.
- Model Based Tester
- Once you cleared the foundation level exam, you can also appear for model based tester extension
- Suitable for those who are working or want to understand model based testing
Advanced Level (CTAL)
- Stands for “Certified Tester Advanced Level”
- This level have three tracks, you can choose one depends on your experience and job nature
- CTAL – TM (Certified Tester Advanced Level , Test Manager)
- CTAL – TA(Certified Tester Advanced Level , Test Analyst)
- CTAL - TTA(Certified Tester Advanced Level , Technical Test Analyst)
If you pass one exam, you will achieve the ISTQB advanced level. You can pass one exam or all three depends on your requirements. See the below table which provides the difference between each exam.
Expert Level (CTEL)
- Stands for "Certified Tester Expert Level"
- The Expert Level currently has four modules, two released and one in development
- Improving the Testing Process
- Assessing Test Processes
- Implementing Test Process Improvement
- Test Management
- Strategic Management
- Operational Test Management
- Managing the Test Team
- Test Automation Engineering (Advanced Level module due in 2016)
- Security Testing (Advanced Level module due in 2016)
